The Golden Spiders is classic Rex Stout ... so glad for the friend who put me onto these! If anything, this selection has a little more pathos, a little more New York City color and vibrancy, a bit more of the authentic Wolfe/Goodwin soul. I read this one, turned back to the first page, and read it again! Great characterizations, pops of real humor, engaging relationships, detection without guts and gore ... although this one had a slightly graphic scene in which Archie, Saul, Fred, and Orrie make sure they get the information they need from some blackmailers. Very seldom anything horrifying in a Rex Stout novel, but they are page-turners. I've read roughly half of them ... I keep trying not to go too fast, because then they'll be gone!

Best of all, perhaps, is the terrific Manhattan setting, life inside the brownstone on 35th, Nero on the top floor with his orchids, Archie and Fritz in the kitchen with things starting to hum in the mornings, Inspector Cramer at the door, the perfect precinct foil to their private enterprise.

At least, when I get to that last one, when the final novel has been read and enjoyed, I know I can start over and enjoy them just as much the next time through.

The trickiest kind of review to write is a review of a mystery. You want to be informative, but at the same time you don't want to give anything away. I hope in this brief review to achieve both goals.

I purchased this book to see how close Timothy Hutton's A&E television version of the story was to Rex Stout's original. I have never been a big Rex Stout reader, but I loved the A&E series, and so a renewed interest in the original novels was awakened.

For the most part, the series is very faithful to the text of the novel, and the atmosphere of the two versions is exactly the same. I don't see how any other electronic media version of Nero Wolfe could have captured his personality any better, nor of the unique interaction between him and the other characters, especially Archie Goodwin. The book is foreboding in some parts and light hearted in others, just like the TV series.

There are a couple of differences worth mentioning, however.

In the book, the initial dialogue between Wolfe and the boy Pete is much longer than in the TV version. I have the feeling that the complete dialogue was originally produced, and then had to be edited to make the overall product fit into the time constraints imposed by TV. That is unfortunate, because a viewer unaware of Wolfe's advice to young Pete cannot appreciate the irony of Archie's later words, 'it's not so much that you earn the money, but that you feel like you've earned the money.'

The ending is also different. Timothy Hutton's is much less hard-boiled than Rex Stout's original. I guess I am a softie at heart, but I like Hutton's better.

I don't have to recommend this book to Rex Stout faithfuls - they know it already. But if you are a new Stout reader like me, I'd recommend it as a good book to start to experience the world of Nero Wolfe.
If you have read any of the Nero Wolfe books, then you need no review to tell you that you will like this book. If you have never read one, look up the chronology and start with "Fer-de-Lance," Rex Stout's first Wolfe mystery, and prepare to be delighted!
As usual with Rex Stout’s books, “The Golden Spiders” has interesting characters, an intriguing plot, sumptuous prose, snappy dialogue and a colorful ambience. It’s great and I also highly recommend A&E’s film version in its “A Nero Wolfe Mystery” series.
Tapered off of Rex Stout for a while. Kinda like eating chocolates...too much of a good thing. But when I read a couple of Ellery Queen novels I was ready to go back to a crime author whose characters didn't talk like they had a broom stick up their butts. What a joyous relief!
Any lovers of Ellery Queen reading this...all I can say is...where the hell is your head?
The Golden Spiders contains one of my favorite characters, Pete Drossos, a 12 year old, who comes to consult Wolfe. It also contains great dialogue and interaction between Wolfe's employees, Archie, Saul, Fred and Orrie. Fred Durkin, so often characterized as somewhat thickheaded and plodding gets his chance to show he's got the right stuff. This is classic Wolfe.
Rex Stout's "The Golden Spiders" (initially published in 1953) is the 22nd book in his "Nero Wolfe" series. It's another excellent one with all the good stuff you'd expect by this point in the series. The single thing that I can find that would have improved the book would be if Stout had Wolfe give some closure to the mother of the young boy we're introduced to at the start of the book. He brought her in for a scene and she just gets forgotten by the end. Other than that, no problems. So, I'm rating the book at an Excellent 5 stars out of 5.
As a joke, Archie entices Wolfe to take a case for a twelve-year old boy. When the boy is killed the next day both Archie and Wolfe feel some obligation to the boy's mother and agree to take $4.30 as a fee for solving his murder. The only clue they have is a pair of gold earrings shaped like spiders so they use the money to run an advertisement looking for information about them. Fortunately, there is a response to the ad. With such vague information as they have Wolfe is able to find who killed not only the boy but two others as well. This story illustrates Wolfe's superb detective ability, and also shows his interactions with Archie and his other three henchmen. It's a great mystery and I highly recommend it.
